    Hi,

I'm trying to make a customized version of the display Divi uses for the archive page for posts, that simply lists them in descending order with the date and post title.

By default, Divi seems to be using index.php for this page if I set a Posts Page under WordPress, Settings, Reading.

So what I'd like to do is create a page with a Divi banner block above the post listing. So far no luck. I've turned off the above setting to set a default post page, then I created a page template called 'myarchive.php' with 'Template Name: Archives2' in the comments above, then I cut and pasted the code from index.php.

Then I go into WP, create a blank Page and set the page template to 'Archives2'. The result is that the page just displays the current page's title and date. No posts are listed.

Any ideas about I could make this work?

You can use Divi Theme Builder to build your archive page: https://www.elegantthemes.com/documentation/divi/the-divi-theme-builder/

If you wish to use plugin for premade archive styling, check this out: https://archive.diviultimate.com/

I tried the first option and set a Custom Header for All Archives pages. This initially seemed to work as it correctly displayed a banner above the list of posts. However, it removed the site menu from the page. Yikes.

How do I get the menu back on this page?

Just remove the Custom Header from the Divi Theme Builder. You should edit the Custom Body instead, by adding a section on top & blog module below it.
