Solved External Jscript functions

    Hi
    I'm very new to all forms of web stuff and although fumbling through most this is causing me a headache.
    I want to store a unique reference number in an external file. I want to get that number and increment it, store the new number back in the file and also bring it back to my web page to create the unique reference.
    I have looked at articles on the web on accessing external .JS files and it looks like it should be simple but cant seem to make anything work at all.
    Can anyone point me at a definitive way to do this please? Is this the right way or should I be taking a different approach? I am running the Divi Powerful Child theme.
