Solved How to customize blockquotes for Extra theme?

Hi, I'm new here and just paid $212 so I can post and maybe find out how to customize blockquotes.

Searched the documentation found at https://www.elegantthemes.com/documentation/?s=how+to+customize+blockquotes&submit.x=20&submit.y=22 and found nothing worthwhile.

I have stress-induced brain damage and really stressed now because the Extra default is about as ugly and unreadable as it gets:

    upload_2022-2-27_19-12-11.png

Can't make my post public like this and there HAS to be a way to get rid of the BOLD and to add PARAGRAPHS instead of line breaks.

    Thanks!

    I found it:

    Go to Visual Editor
Click around until you happen to select the "block?" you want to edit.

I think it's the BLACK buttons.

    upload_2022-2-27_19-49-45.png

And then just click on the quotes.

And that led me to the next question:

Is there a web page somewhere or cheatsheet to SEE what the fonts actually look like?

I don't have it in me to wait a second or two while I click on the font selection to see what it looks like.

Not to mention that I have brain damage and could not possibly remember what I might have liked. I need to see ALL of them at the SAME time to be able to make a good selection.

    Thannks!

To add spacing between paragraph in blockquote, try the below CSS in WP Admin > Extra > Theme Options > Custom CSS:
    Code:
Log In or Sign Up to view this code.

Thanks so much, that's how I like to see the fonts!

And I'll have to try that CSS tomorrow, my brain is fried.

I just searched for "Divi for Dummies" and it looks like maybe I'll have to write that book -- didn't find anything. I've always had HTML and CSS cheat sheets and between brain damage and not working on my sites regularly, I just can't remember anything.

To make matters worse, many mouseovers are missing in Divi and sometimes things are in the wrong place in the menus. Half the time I lose my changes and I have zero grasp on how it functions. Used Headway for many years and don't know why this is so difficult for me :(

Do you have a Divi cheat sheet?

I can't even figure out saving yet, global, desktop, tablet, phone, applying to just ONE page, all pages, the entire site ...

I can read an article on it, but I can't remember that stuff.

    How do I SAVE????

    The dreaded LOSE EVERYTHING screen:

    upload_2022-2-27_21-16-55.png

I have never figured out how to save there. My only options are:

    1) YES - lose everything
    2) X -- get back to where I was
    3) UPDATE the post and it does nothing.

How do I get back to editing my text without losing everything?

I really had to get back to the "normal" editor, so finally DID lose not only EVERYTHING I did today, but my page lost ALL formatting.

At one point I even saw a SAVE button on the lower right, clicked it, but apparently nothing saved.

    I could cry.

Fortunately could go back to a revision from 5 minutes earlier, but I just don't understand how this works.

So then I go to edit my post and at the top is this:

    [et_pb_section fb_built="1" admin_label="section" _builder_version="3.22" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_row admin_label="row" _builder_version="3.25" background_size="initial" background_position="top_left" background_repeat="repeat" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="3.25" custom_padding="|||" global_colors_info="{}" custom_padding__hover="|||"][et_pb_text quote_border_color="#0038F0" quote_border_color_tablet="#0038F0" quote_border_color_phone="#0038F0" quote_border_color_last_edited="on|desktop" admin_label="Text" _builder_version="4.14.8" quote_font="Thasadith||||||||" quote_letter_spacing="1px" quote_line_height="1.2em" background_size="initial" background_position="top_left" background_repeat="repeat" quote_font_tablet="Times New Roman||||||||" quote_font_phone="Times New Roman||||||||" quote_font_last_edited="on|desktop" global_colors_info="{}" quote_border_color__hover_enabled="off|desktop"]

So, why are the Divi customizations now part of my post?

Basically, there are 2 ways of editing a post:
    1. Default / Standard Editor
    2. Divi Builder

And you can only choose one of them. You can't switch between them or else you will lose your changes.
It's because you're now on Default / Standard Editor & the revision changed it back to the Divi Builder content that you saved previously. So now you just need to enable back Divi Builder on the post:

    upload_2022-2-28_13-25-4.png

And you will be back to the previous Divi Builder interface:

    upload_2022-2-28_13-26-41.png

**Since you're building it with Divi Builder, then remember NOT to click Return To Standard Editor

For any changes you made in Divi Builder, to save it, you just need to click Update.

    upload_2022-2-28_13-29-8.png

To preview the changes in live mode, click this:

    upload_2022-2-28_13-29-28.png

When you switch to live preview mode, you can simply save it by clicking the save button:

    upload_2022-2-28_13-30-37.png

Though, I would recommend you to use the frontend builder instead. To do so, just click Build On The Front End:

    upload_2022-2-28_13-31-26.png

In the frontend builder, you can save it by clicking the three dot button at the bottom of your site & click Save.

    upload_2022-2-28_13-32-36.png

I prefer the frontend builder because it won't reload the page when you save it.
**In the backend builder, whenever you click Save or Update, it will reload the page.

Also while you're creating your Divi site, I would suggest you to temporarily disable these 2 options:
    1. Disable Divi Static CSS File cache: WP Admin > Divi > Theme Options > Builder > Advanced > Static CSS File Generation > Clear / Disabled
    2. Disable Dynamic CSS: WP Admin > Divi > Theme Options > General > Performance > Dynamic CSS > Disabled

Sometimes these 2 options might cause some display issue on your Divi site. So, it's best to temporarily disable them while you're editing your site.

    Last one for today :)

    upload_2022-2-27_22-36-22.png

It doesn't seem to make any difference.

It is very strange that at some point today the paragraphs displayed ok. I think it was after I manually added the paragraphs, and then there was too much space and I had to edit mine back out again.

I did a bunch of stuff and kept reloading the page and it was fine until I now made my text edits. Didn't touch anything in the quote. So I tried the CSS finally.

Thanks so much for your detailed explanation, with all the articles I've read and videos I've watched, I never understood that you can't "easily" edit posts once you used the Divi front end editor.

This site is over 10 years old with hundreds of posts and I'm going to have to make countless updates, reorganize, categories, tags, etc, not to mention rewrites and fixing typos, didn't have time the last couple years and am just getting back to it.

So I have to be able to use the standard editor, fast and painless. Not to mention that there may be guest authors and maybe a helper, can't have them messing up the theme.

I thought that Extra was for real news sites, with staff and editors and updates.

All the changes I made are only to the ONE post -- I wanted GLOBAL changes.

It seems like everything I did in the page SHOULD have been done in the theme customizer so it applies to the entire site and then I can use the standard editor for the real work, posting.

When I go to the theme customizer, there are hardly any options.

Did I buy the wrong theme?

Here's an old post with a quote, not stunning, but readable:

    https://highdesertdirt.com/blog/2018/08/24/lmrfd-board-meeting-in-meadview-on-monday-8-27-18/

One click, and I'm editing, super fast. And this is the toolbar I need, are the colorful buttons on the right from Divi?

    upload_2022-2-28_12-32-16.png

So fortunately I could copy my text into a NEW post, made no changes, just saved it:

    https://highdesertdirt.com/blog/2022/02/28/3-6-22-lake-mead-city-community-water-co-op-elections/

I really don't understand why I don't get the paragraph breaks as in the EXISTING posts.

I don't think I ever want to modify the theme for ONE post.

Also, it seems that when you use the front end divi editor, you can NEVER switch to another theme because not only will you use all the Divi customization, but the entire site will be destroyed because every post will lose all line breaks?

    Your thoughts?

Since I have a very busy week and the post needs to be live, I created a new post and used the screenshot instead of the quote, but left up the post with the quote as a test post.

For your blockcode linebreak issue, try the below CSS instead:
    Code:
Log In or Sign Up to view this code.
Indeed it's best to stick with the standard editor for all your posts.

And here's how you create a GLOBAL design for your post page:
    1. Go to WP Admin > Divi / Extra > Theme Builder > Add New Template > Tick 'All Posts' > Create Template
    2. And you build your own custom post design here, which will apply to all posts. As for the post content in the standard editor, it will load in the place of the Post Content Module.

If you don't wish to build from scratch, Divi has tons of Free blog post template that you can easily import to your Divi Theme Builder: https://www.elegantthemes.com/blog/?s=free+blog

So I can use a blog post template with the Extra theme?

Update: Just read https://www.elegantthemes.com/blog/...-templates-for-different-categories-with-divi so I guess I can.

And the blockquotes now have the paragraph spacing! Thanks so much.

Can you give me the CSS to change the font and the color for the vertical line?

It's been at least 15 years since I last did CSS, but if you post the code for any font / color I can change it.

    Thanks again!

Do you have any idea why the paragraphs for OLD posts are now separated by two lines and the new posts have only one line. So odd. Here's an old post and there's no code except for the blockquote and one line between paragraphs:

    https://highdesertdirt.com/blog/201...-voting-on-the-annexation-of-all-of-meadview/
    " upload_2022-3-3_12-44-53.png

And here's the new post blockquote:

    upload_2022-3-3_12-50-28.png

If this is not an easy fix, don't worry, I'll have Elegant Themes look into that as it's not something that has to get fixed immediately.

So appreciate your quick replies! For over a year I've tried to figure out Divi and finally got at least a bit of an understanding how it works. Not exactly as I hoped and I'm going to have to get a new CSS cheat sheet. Watched some more getting started with Divi videos, but none properly explain the concept for existing sites.

    That fixed it!

Going to check and update my other sites next week. It's strange how they have different problems after switching from Headway to Extra.

    THANK YOU for your help!
