Solved Image size changes when I exit the builder

I've got a simple 2 column row, I've enabled the "equalize column size" option, and when the visual builder is active, the image looks great - it's full size, as I expect. Once I exit the builder, the image shrinks to about half the size. There seems to be nothing I can do - if I force the height of the image taller, it stretches the image out of proportion and it looks horrible. I can't figure out any way to get this to work! Has anyone experienced this? I've attached screenshots to show what I mean.

 

disabling the responsive image setting in the divi settings menu seems to have fixed it
